How to Import Turkish Towels: A Buyer's Guide (2026)
What to check before buying Turkish towels wholesale: weight and cotton, Denizli mills, minimum orders, certificates, labels, and duties for the EU, UK and US.
In short: Türkiye is the world's 6th largest home-textile exporter, and most of its towels are woven in Denizli. Before you order, fix four things in writing: towel weight (g/m²), cotton and yarn, colour and size tolerances, and labelling for your market. Turkish-made towels enter the EU duty-free with an A.TR certificate, and the UK at 0% with an origin declaration; the US charges duty on top of its normal rate.
Why buyers source towels from Türkiye
Türkiye exported US$2.4 billion of home textiles in 2025 and ranks 6th in the world for home-textile exports, according to the Ministry of Trade. Towels and bathrobes alone were worth about US$310 million, the third-largest product group in the sector.
Three things make Turkish towels worth a look:
- One city, a full supply chain. The Denizli Exporters' Association (DENİB) says about 90% of Türkiye's towel, bathrobe and bedding production happens in and around Denizli. Spinning, weaving, dyeing and sewing are often done by the same company or by neighbours, which shortens lead times and makes quality easier to control.
- Distance. Trucks from western Türkiye reach central Europe in days, and short sea routes serve the Gulf and North Africa. Smaller, more frequent orders become practical.
- Market access. Under the EU–Türkiye customs union, industrial goods such as towels move between Türkiye and the EU without customs duties.
There is one thing to watch. "Turkish towel" is a popular label, and it is also used on products made elsewhere. In 2026, Denizli exporters started work to reserve the "Turkish Towels" name for towels and bathrobes made in Türkiye from Turkish cotton. Ask your supplier where the towel was woven and where the cotton was grown, and put both on the specification sheet.
Know what you are buying
| Product | What it is | Typical buyers |
|---|---|---|
| Terry towels | Looped pile on one or both sides: bath sheet, bath, hand, guest and face towels | Retail, hotels, spas |
| Hotel towels | Terry towels in white or light colours, made to survive industrial laundering | Hotels, laundries, hospitality suppliers |
| Bathrobes | Terry, waffle or velour robes, often with embroidery | Hotels, spas, retail |
| Peshtemal (hammam towel) | Thin, flat-woven cotton towel with fringes; light and quick to dry | Beach and lifestyle retail, spas |
| Beach towels | Larger terry or velour towels, often printed or jacquard | Retail, resorts |
Peshtemal deserves a note: the flat-woven hammam towel is a traditional Turkish product, and many weavers around Denizli specialise in it.
Weight and cotton: the two numbers that decide quality
Weight is given in grams per square metre (g/m², often written GSM). Heavier is not always better: a heavy towel feels plush but takes longer to dry and costs more to ship. As a rough guide used across the trade:
| Weight | Feel | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| Under 400 g/m² | Light, fast drying | Gym, beach, budget hospitality |
| 400–600 g/m² | Medium | Most retail and hotel towels |
| Over 600 g/m² | Heavy, plush | Premium retail, luxury hotels and spas |
Agree a weight tolerance (for example ±5%) and ask how the mill measures it.
Cotton and yarn matter as much as weight. Ask for:
- Cotton origin: Turkish-grown or imported, and whether any blend (bamboo-viscose, polyester border) is used.
- Combed or carded: combed cotton has short fibres removed, which gives a smoother, stronger towel with less lint.
- Ring-spun or open-end yarn: ring-spun yarn is softer and stronger; open-end is cheaper.
- Twist: low-twist and zero-twist yarns feel softer and fluffier but need more careful weaving.
Put the specification in writing
Most disputes come from details that were agreed verbally. A good specification sheet covers:
- Size of each item, with tolerance in centimetres
- Weight in g/m², with tolerance
- Fibre content, cotton origin and yarn type
- Pile, border and hem: plain, dobby or jacquard border; hem type
- Colour: Pantone reference or approved lab dip, and colour fastness to washing
- Shrinkage after washing, as a maximum percentage
- Labels: fibre composition, care instructions, country of origin, your brand label
- Packaging: folding, bands, polybags, inner and outer cartons, barcodes and carton marks
Approve a pre-production sample against this sheet, and keep one sealed sample to compare with the bulk order.
Minimum orders, samples and lead times
Minimum order quantities depend on the mill and, above all, on dyeing: each colour is dyed in batches, so mills often set a minimum per colour as well as per design. Stock designs in standard colours have lower minimums than custom jacquards or woven logos.
Ask every supplier for:
- the minimum per design and per colour
- the cost and timing of samples (stock samples are fast; custom samples need lab dips first)
- the production lead time after sample approval
- how they handle a reorder of the same colour
On Silkhan, the minimum order and lead time are listed for every product on the supplier's page once you are signed in.
Certificates and testing
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 shows that a textile has been tested for harmful substances. It has four product classes; towels usually fall under Class 2 (direct skin contact) or Class 1 for baby products.
- Organic claims need certification of the whole chain, for example GOTS or the Organic Content Standard. Without it, do not market the towel as organic.
- Test reports from an accredited laboratory for colour fastness, shrinkage and weight protect you if the bulk order differs from the sample.
Check that each certificate is valid on the date of shipment and that it names the factory that actually makes your towels.
Duties and documents by market
Cotton terry towels are classified under HS 6302.60 ("toilet linen and kitchen linen, of terry towelling or similar terry fabrics, of cotton"). Duty depends on where you import:
| Market | Standard duty for HS 6302.60 | Towels made in Türkiye | Document to claim it |
|---|---|---|---|
| European Union | 12% | 0% under the EU–Türkiye customs union | A.TR movement certificate |
| United Kingdom | 12% | 0% if the goods meet UK–Türkiye rules of origin | Origin declaration on the invoice |
| United States | 9.1% | 9.1% plus an additional 12.5% Section 301 duty on Turkish goods since 24 July 2026 | No preference |
US tariffs have changed several times since 2025. Confirm the rate with your customs broker before you place the order. In every market, import VAT or sales tax is charged on top of duty.
Your supplier should send a commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading, plus the A.TR certificate for the EU or the origin declaration for the UK.
Labelling for your market
- EU: fibre composition labelling is required under the Textile Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011, in the language(s) of the country where the towel is sold.
- United States: textile products need fibre content, country of origin and the identity of the manufacturer or dealer on the label.
- Gulf markets: importers often ask for Arabic on labels or packaging.
Send your label artwork to the mill together with the specification sheet, so labels are sewn in during production.
How to shortlist a towel mill
- Ask for the factory address and visit it, or have it visited.
- Compare at least three quotes for the same specification, not three different towels.
- Check export experience in your market and ask for the customs documents they normally provide.
- Confirm who weaves and who dyes: if dyeing is outsourced, ask who does it.
- Agree payment terms that match the risk: a deposit with balance against shipping documents, or a letter of credit for larger orders.
Silkhan's home-textile directory covers manufacturers in Denizli, Bursa and Uşak. Verified suppliers have been visited in person, with trade registry, capacity and export history checked. Send one request with your specification, and a sourcing manager replies with matched quotes.
Frequently asked questions
Are Turkish towels better than towels from other countries?
Not automatically. Quality depends on the cotton, the yarn, the weight and the finishing, not only on the country. Türkiye's advantage is integrated mills in Denizli, short distances to Europe and the Gulf, and duty-free access to the EU. Compare specifications, not labels.
What towel weight should a hotel order?
Most hotels choose 450–600 g/m² in white: heavy enough to feel good, light enough to dry quickly and survive industrial laundering. Luxury hotels and spas often go above 600 g/m².
Do I pay customs duty on Turkish towels in the EU?
Towels made in Türkiye enter the EU without customs duty under the EU–Türkiye customs union, if the shipment comes with an A.TR movement certificate. Import VAT is still due. Without the certificate, the standard rate for HS 6302.60 is 12%.
What is a peshtemal?
A peshtemal (hammam towel) is a thin, flat-woven cotton towel with fringes, traditionally used in Turkish baths. It is light, folds small and dries quickly, which makes it popular for beach, travel and spa use.
Can a Turkish mill produce towels under my own brand?
Yes. Many mills in Denizli produce private-label towels with the buyer's woven logo, labels, packaging and barcodes. Minimum quantities are usually higher for custom jacquard designs and special colours.
How do I make sure the bulk order matches the sample?
Put every detail in a written specification, approve a pre-production sample, keep a sealed copy, and arrange an inspection before shipment. Test reports for weight, shrinkage and colour fastness give you something objective to compare.
